#GetOutside this Sunday

Sep 27, 2018

This Sunday is Ordnance Survey’s National GetOutside Day. They’re inviting you to get active outdoors, so they’re running regional events and encouraging people to create their own adventure outside with family and friends.

Forest Glade is a fantastic base for your outdoor adventure. We’re surrounded by woodland with tracks and trails suitable all levels of walking, from a family stroll to a serious hike. All you need is a sturdy pair of boots. Tiverton Canal Basin is only 25 minutes away and offers 11.25 miles of pretty, canal-side walking and cycling along the Grand Western Canal. Of course, we’re also perfectly located for access to either the famously rugged landscape of Dartmoor, or the more verdant Exmoor.  There’s lots of lovely local information on the Explore Devon website too.

There’s a guided mountain bike event in East Devon on Sunday, linked with National GetOutside Day, which is aimed at intermediate riders. There’s plenty of cycling across Devon, however, with the Exe Estuary Trail being a particular favourite with families. This trail takes you right around the Exe Estuary from Dawlish to Exmouth, passing through the pretty village of Starcross, Topsham and Lympstone.

If you’re feeling brave, there are plenty of lovely beaches near us where you can take a dip in the sea. We’ve looked at our favourite seaside locations in a previous blog. The sea is still surprisingly warm at the moment, having been bathed in sunshine for much of the summer.

Whilst the weather this week has been simply glorious here in Devon, it’s always best to be prepared for changes in conditions and, of course, it’s advisable to take a trusty map with you! We have local maps available in our shop and we’re happy to help with directions or ideas for your own outdoor exploits.

Surely, though, the best thing about all these outdoor pursuits is that you can justify a nice hot cuppa and a slice of cake at the end!
