Adventurous Days Out from Forest Glade

Jun 29, 2018

For some people, holidaying with us here on the edge of the woods is adventure enough, but for those that are a little more intrepid, we thought we'd introduce you to some exciting and, dare we say it, 'daring' days out!

Very nearby and absolutely fantastic fun for children and adults alike is the Bear Trail near Cullompton. This muddy adventure trail is suitable for all ages. Leap over the muddy bear pits, whizz down the zip wires or crawl through the tunnels. According to their website, "He who bears...wins!" You can save 10% on tickets by booking online.

Stick Man Haldon

Haldon Forest Park near Exeter is another family-friendly activity centre, where you can hire bikes to explore the safe, off-road family trails or the more technical downhill mountain biking tracks. There are different levels of difficulty, colour graded by how challenging they are. Haldon Forest also offers a 'Stick Man' walking trail for adventurous small children and Segway hire for those partial to gliding through the countryside. If you're not afraid of heights, the forest is also home to a Go Ape treetop adventure park.

If you'd prefer less mud and more water, then you can try your hand at paddle-boarding in Sidmouth, with Jurassic Paddle Sports. They hire out sit-on kayaks and stand up paddle (SUP) boards on beautiful Sidmouth beach. They offer tuition with full safety cover by qualified professionals. You can find them by looking for their big flags on the main beach in July and August. Slightly further afield, Rock Solid (https://rocksolidcoasteering.uk/) run
coasteering sessions for anyone over the age of 7. Coasteering gives you the chance to explore the rocky Jurassic coastline by climbing, jumping, and swimming.

Wild Swimming

Finally, how about braving the chilly but stunning River Dart by wild swimming on Dartmoor? There are several suggested locations on this Wild Swimming Website. The clean, peaty water at Spitchwick is very popular with families in the summer and Holne Pool has a small waterfall and a large sunbathing rock. There's nothing more invigorating than a dip in the Dart!
