National Fish and Chip Day (http://www.neoda.org.uk/fishandchipday) was launched in 2015 to celebrate the nation’s favourite dish. We’re spoilt for choice when it comes to seafood and access to great fish and chips in Devon.

Whether you’re someone that likes it straight up and traditional with a bit of salt and vinegar, or you prefer yours drenched in curry sauce, you can be guaranteed a lovely crispy batter and tasty fresh chips from our local takeaways.

There’s fierce debate among locals over which is the better option when it comes to our nearest two fish and chip shops in Cullompton. Some say Marshall’s fish bar do the best fish and chips in the area. We’ve always found them to be cooked fresh, with large portions and friendly service. Marshalls do a gluten-free Thursday. Others attest that Hongs Chinese does the best version, with many people going there just for the special curry sauce. Why not try both and see which you prefer?!

Clarkes in Willand also gets great reviews. They do their chips with piri piri powder if you fancy spicing things up a bit.

Greendale Fish and Chips

Greendale Farm Shop on the Exeter to Sidmouth road has an excellent reputation. They serve fish from their own boats and chips from their own potatoes. You can’t get fresher than that. They have gluten-free fish and chips on the first Wednesday of each month. They also have a wonderful fish counter with a wide array of locally caught fish and seafood.

Greendale Takeaway

The Fish Shed at Darts Farm in Topsham also serve locally caught fresh fish. You can request theirs cooked in the traditional batter or grilled as a healthy and tasty alternative.

Darts Farm Fish and Chips

If you’d like to sample your fish and chips with the briny smell of the sea in the air and a little wooden fork in your hand, then you can’t do better than head over to Sidmouth, where you can find the White Horse Café not far from the sea front. Top it off with a delicious gelato-style ice cream from Taste. Just keep half an eye out for those seagulls!

Sidmouth Coastline

If you fancy actually going out and catching some fish for yourself, you can’t do better than heading to Beer or Branscombe, where a mackerel fishing trip makes a great family activity. Enjoy the beautiful East Devon coastline from the water and perhaps return with some fresh mackerel for the barbecue.

We’d also highly recommend Sidmouth Trawlers, who are just at the end of the Esplanade in Sidmouth, where you can buy lovely fresh fish if you want to ‘do it yourself’.  They also do crab sandwiches and fish baps in high season.

As we said you will spoilt for choice for Fish and Chips in Devon. Don’t forget to let us know which is your favourite!
